Each mouthguard is made from an impression of the individual's teeth to create a close-fitting appliance. Mobile fitting appointments are available across Sydney's North Shore for children and adults participating in contact, collision and fall-risk sports.
Individually formed
The appliance is formed to the dental model rather than relying on the wearer to mould a store-bought guard.
Individual, team or school colours
Preferred colours or club combinations can be discussed, subject to the materials available.

How a custom sports mouthguard differs
A custom mouthguard is manufactured from an impression and model of the individual's teeth. Its fit and retention therefore do not depend on the wearer heating and self-moulding a generic appliance.
The Australian Dental Association recommends custom-fitted mouthguards over store-bought mouthguards for sport. Mouthguard suitability, thickness and design still depend on the sport, age, dentition and any orthodontic treatment.
For children
Growing mouths need regular fit checks
As baby teeth are lost and adult teeth erupt, the shape of the mouth can change quickly. A mouthguard that fitted earlier in the season may become loose as the teeth move.
Check the fit whenever teeth move or erupt, after significant dental work and following changes to orthodontic treatment. Replacement may be needed when the guard no longer seats securely, becomes damaged or has been heavily chewed.
Sport and training
Contact, collision and fall-risk activities
Custom mouthguards may be considered for rugby league, rugby union, AFL, soccer, hockey, basketball, netball, martial arts, boxing, baseball, cricket, skateboarding, BMX, mountain biking and other activities where contact with a ball, player, equipment or the ground may occur.
Teams, schools and clubs
Group impression sessions may be arranged at a training venue or suitable club location. Call with the number of players, age group, location, preferred dates and any team-colour requirements.
The fitting process
What happens when a custom mouthguard is made?
The appointment sequence can vary according to age, tooth position, orthodontic treatment and whether the fitting is individual or part of a group session.
- Teeth and current fit are reviewedThe dental prosthetist checks the teeth relevant to the appliance and discusses the sport, age group, colours and any recent dental or orthodontic changes.
- An impression is takenThe impression records the shape and position of the teeth so a dental model can be prepared.
- The mouthguard is manufacturedThe selected material is formed over the model and finished in the laboratory.
- Fit and care are checkedThe completed guard is checked in the mouth and instructions are provided for use, cleaning, storage and future fit checks.

The fee is confirmed before the mouthguard is made. The applicable health fund item number is provided on the receipt, but any rebate depends on the fund, level of extras cover, waiting periods and annual limits.

It may be possible, but the appliance needs to allow for the orthodontic treatment and expected tooth movement. Suitability and timing should be assessed in coordination with the treating dentist or orthodontist.

Many extras policies contribute towards custom mouthguards, but the rebate depends on the fund, level of cover, waiting periods and annual limits. The applicable item number is provided on the receipt so the member can submit or check the claim with their fund.
